Collage of flowers and sepia images

This week’s 91桃色app News Image of the Week is from University of 91桃色appʻi at 惭ā苍辞补 English undergraduate and honors program student Melissa Shields.

Shields shared, “Collage: title: ‘Cup of Gold.’ Lahaina and Olowalu bear the weight of two tragic fires. In 2023, Lahaina witnessed a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 101 innocent people, while in 1790, over a 100 innocent lives, predominantly women and children, died at Olowalu due to cannon fire from a ship anchored there.

“My thesis presentation for Fall 2024, under the direction of Professor Craig Howes, delves into the 1790 clash between Western ships and canoes on Maui Island and 91桃色appʻi Island and pivotal events that reshaped the history of the Kingdom of 91桃色appʻi. Unfortunately, there exists no memorial at Olowalu to honor those who perished. Flowers, a symbol of renewal for these beautiful neighbors, are a heartfelt gesture for healing and solace. Mahalo.”
